Applicants are asked to reflect on the following in connection with writing their essay:
Part I: Portion of Zachary Mascareñas’ Senior Portfolio
“I was encouraging other peers to stay in school and stop with the negative things in life. I would explain how
it isn’t worth it and how life is beautiful and mesmerizing when you are living a pure and healthy life. I even
got closer to God after this [situation] because He really opened my eyes and did this through a disaster. Our
future is the most important thing on earth, and we have to live for the moment while taking headstarts while we
are young to get ahead when the future comes.
I really feel that perseverance and respect will get someone anywhere they want to be in life. Keep believing
and pushing yourself through whatever it may be and respect everyone, maybe even a little too much just
because you don’t know what someone may be feeling that day and a simple smile might just give them the
boost they need. I was in a dark place in my life for about half of my high school until I started choosing
happiness and faith over people’s opinions of me or negative energy. For some reason, setbacks or tragedies are
actually the best motivation for me and that’s why I want everybody to get that mindset because it only makes
you stronger, wiser, and overall a better person. Your happiness will come and become more meaningful when
you put someone else’s before yours.”
Part II: Reflection upon Zachary’s life by his parents, Nate and Staci Mascareñas
“Our beautiful son, Zachary, was such a blessing. Although it was definitely not enough, we were blessed to have
19 years to watch him grow into such a great young man, and we are forever proud of the young man he was.
Zach was such an amazing son, brother, uncle and friend who handled everything good or bad that came his way.
He once said, ‘God gives you situations that you can handle, but doesn’t mean it’s gonna be easy.’
Zachary excelled at everything that set his mind out to do. He was a stellar student athlete that could have
graduated at the end of his sophomore year but chose to stay in school to enjoy the things he loved. Zach was
known by all for his talent and love for basketball. He was an amazing player who had the ability to bring so
much energy to the game. Among all his talents, Zach found a true talent in music. He wrote lyrics and expressed
them out in song, which he absolutely loved, even creating a couple of albums with his friends!
By his many friends, he was known as an outgoing, funny, and kindhearted person with no filter. You always
knew where you stood with Zach, he would be straight up and honest with what he thought. Zach was extremely
independent and was determined to make a name for himself, to do good in life, and continue to make his family
proud of him. He also had a strong belief that each of us has a purpose in life.
Zach touched the lives of many with his kind heart and his amazing smile. After his passing, we became quite
aware that our son had a very special gift, the gift of encouragement. So many different people of all ages have
shared with us the impact that Zach had on their lives. Zach would befriend the person who needed a friend, he
would listen to those who were hurting and brokenhearted and offer sound advice that was honest and offered
others hope. He often shared his story of the loss of his brother in the hopes of helping those who were
experiencing the same thing. He talked with people on the brink of giving up and encouraged them to keep the
focus on God and helping others and things would have a way of working out.”
