Mesa Vista’s Griego Wins 200, 400 At State

May 14th

Mesa Vista High School junior Abrianna Griego had a bad memory from the 2017 Class A-3A state track and field meet. She had finished second in the 400-meter dash. She realized that she couldn’t settle for second best this year.

“This was definitely the year to do it,” Griego said. “It’s going to be tough next year.”

Griego had the fastest state-qualifying time in the 400-meter dash coming into the 2018 Class A-3A state track and field meet at the Great Friends of UNM track and field facilities in Albuquerque. However, in the preliminary heats two runners from rival Escalante High School posted faster times going into the finals.

Prior to the finals, Griego also had a decision to make. She had also run a state-qualifying time in the 800-meter run. On the day of the finals (May 5), the 800-meter run would be held before the finals of the 400-meter dash. Griego would have just 90 minutes of rest before running the 400-meter dash.

“I couldn’t make a decision,” Griego said. “My Coach made it.
